Chhaya is a virtual camera for Windows. It reads your webcam, optionally replaces your face with an animated avatar, and presents the result to other applications as a camera device.

Chhaya has no servers, accounts, or networking code. It collects and transmits no data.

Personal data we collect

None. Video and facial measurements are processed locally. Face tracking uses three machine-learning models on your GPU, NPU, or CPU to measure face position and expression; it does not identify people.

How data is used and disclosed

Your video is used locally to produce the picture shown by the virtual camera. Chhaya discloses no data. When you select Chhaya as a camera, the selected application receives its video and that application's privacy policy governs its handling.

The video buffer

While the virtual camera is running, C:\ProgramData\Chhaya\frame.bin holds live video. Other software on the same computer can read it, allowing sandboxed camera clients to receive frames without a separate permission prompt.

The file remains after Chhaya closes until overwritten. Delete C:\ProgramData\Chhaya to clear it. This matters on shared computers.

Network connections

There are none. Chhaya sends no usage data, crash reports, diagnostics, or identifiers and has no built-in updater. Microsoft Store delivers application updates. If you explicitly select an NPU whose vendor component is missing, Windows may install that component; that is a Microsoft operation and does not occur by default.

Access and control

  • Delete settings and logs under %LOCALAPPDATA%\Chhaya.
  • Delete avatars you added under Documents\Chhaya\avatars.
  • Delete the video buffer under C:\ProgramData\Chhaya.
  • Use Remove virtual camera from this PC before uninstalling. Uninstalling alone leaves an inert registry entry and C:\Program Files\Chhaya; neither holds personal data.

Windows camera permission is controlled under Settings → Privacy & security → Camera. There is no data request to make because Chhaya holds no data.

Children

Chhaya collects no data from anyone, of any age.
